Hollow Lantern rewards the players who get lost

October 11, 2026 · Lukas Brenner

Hollow Lantern is a game I almost rushed, and rushing it is the worst way to play. It's an exploration adventure where your lantern is both your guide and a resource, and the tension comes from deciding how far to push into the dark.

Early on you'll want to sprint toward objectives. Resist it. Half the puzzles and most of the story are tucked into side rooms you'll blow past if you're in a hurry. The game trusts you to explore, and it pays off with these little atmospheric moments.

Keep a mental map of lit areas so you never strand yourself in the dark. There's no combat to save you — getting disoriented with a dying lantern is the real danger, and it's genuinely tense the first time it happens.

If you approach it the way you'd approach a quiet walk rather than a checklist, Hollow Lantern becomes something special. It's easily the most atmospheric mobile game I've played lately.
